Poster presented June 4, 2026, at the Nursing Knowledge Big Data Science Conference held in Minneapolis.
Learning Objectives: Understand the overall barriers and facilitators to realizing the full potential of electronic case reporting (eCR), from the perspectives of experts across diverse professional roles.
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for more efficient public health data exchange. As a result, electronic case reporting (eCR), a national standards-based data exchange was rapidly implemented. eCR automates the extraction of notifiable disease information from electronic health records (EHRs) and reporting to public health agencies (PHAs)1,2. Although eCR is currently used by more than 60,000 organizations across the United States3, its implementation and use remain largely limited to a few infectious diseases. Minnesota faces similar challenges despite indicating readiness to expand eCR to 77 infectious conditions beyond COVID-194. This underscores the importance of understanding key facilitators and barriers to eCR implementation in order to promote broader use and realize its full potential.
