This document describes the development, advocacy, and implementation of the Unique Nurse Identifier (UNI), specifically the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) ID, as recommended by the Nursing Knowledge: Big Data Science (NKBDS) Policy and Advocacy Workgroup and the Alliance for Nursing Informatics (ANI). From 2019 through 2026, a significant body of scholarly work, including presentations, webinars, and policy discussions has been created to advance the development, validation, and promotion of the UNI concept, underscoring the interdisciplinary and sustained effort to promote UNI adoption, including advocacy with professional nursing and nursing informatics organizations as well as healthcare and health IT policy leaders.
